In July of 2011, ferry travel became a very real transportation option for vacationers who wish to travel between the United States and the Bahamas without paying the high cost of air fare.
Spanish ferry operator Balearia launched fast ferry Pinar del Rio, a 32-knot vessel that easily transports 450 passengers and up to 80 vehicles per trip. The Pinar del Rio makes daily trips between Florida and the Bahamas, docking in Ft. Lauderdale and Bimini. The 76 mile trip lasts for approximately two and a half hours, and features a casino, duty free, shop and a bar and cafeteria for guests to enjoy as they make the crossing.
The ferry leaves Ft. Lauderdale each morning at 10 a.m., and returns at 5:30 p.m., making day trips and overnight stays a real possibility. Wednesday, the Pinar del Rio takes a break, and no ferry services are available.
The cost of a one way ticket is $49(USD) per person.
